I am starting to think that what people call superb goaltending is more a reflection of the system than it is on the goaltender himself. The numbers paint little to no picture as to how well a goalie is playing

Scott Gordon has been great for this team and Lupul especially. As has Greg Cronin. Our PK has been great since Wilson washed his hands of it after the media got on his ass and Cronin got the right guys for the job.. I think Rob Zettler needs to go though, replace him with Eakins. Let Eakins work on systems for 5 on 5, Cronin handle the PK and Gordon handle the PP. Wilson can stand there, look pretty and offer some awesome lines for HBO 24/7.. then he can 'coach' out his contract.. be given a cushy job doing nothing like Fletcher and Eakins can take over and bring up his assistant from the Marlies he's worked with for years.

Coaching solved entirely if that is done.

Carlyle may ask for Dave Farrish to assist as well or they may end up keeping Cronin and Gordon. Pretty sure Zettler wouldn't survive though. Might be a bit of a circus for Dougie but it would be cool. Gordon to the marlies maybe?

That I could live with. I would love to see him as an assitant coach. I just want him up with the big club.

As for the mirroring the big club. I think that is good when the NHL club has a good system. With the way it is now, I want the MArlies as far away from that system as possible. It's terrible and isn't going to get us anywhere.

I wouldn't mind the following nextt year:

TML:

Head Coach: Randy Carlyle
Assistant 1: Dallas Eakins
Assistant 2: ??
Goalie Coach: Allaire

Marlies:

Head Coach: Dougie Gilmour (clap) - Or someone more fitting, just think this would be cool

I will agree that the callups the last 2 years seem to come up ready and rarin' to go. The problem I see is that usually a farm team's system mirrors the big club so that player's can step in and fill a hole as easily as possible. With everyone screaming for a new system maybe it's better to go outside for a replacement and make Eakins an assistant for now. I don't think this market can handle being patient with a first timer behind the bench

I don't really agree that only this year he has been able to motivate his players. We simply had no decent talent to motivate. The ones that we did motivate (in Crabb and Boyce) ended up as contributing pieces on the leafs the last 2 years. Aside from that, I can't really say we had any talent that was worthy of the NHL (both skill and age wise). The fact that we didnt finish bottom 5 in the league year in and year out was a result of coaching imo

I still maintain a coach is only as good as the players he's given. I don't recall Eakins being a great motivator when the Marlies missed the playoffs the last 2 years. Now his talent level is better and he's a "great motivator".
Barry Trotz is the only guy that consistently makes something out of nothing (at least in the regular season). We need a hard ass guy for a couple years until his act wears thin like Carlyle, Hitch or Torts

Carlyle may be a good option, however I am scared that if we get him Lupul will regress under him. I do not think they have a good relationship.

Personally i wouldn't mind seeing Eakins being given the shot. Something is to be said for a guy who can motivate his players as well as he does. If we don't give him the shot soon, I think he may be given it elsewhere and I would hate to lose him.
