The Slide Rule

Players signed to SPCs who are returned to Junior prior to playing 9 NHL games do not count towards a team’s SPC limit.  Instead, those players would  “slide” off the 50-SPC list while remaining on the larger 90-man Reserve List.

In the case of the Maple Leafs, Greg Mckegg, David Broll and Andrew Crescenzi fall under this category.  In the event that Greg Mckegg, David Broll and Andrew Crescenzi are sent back to Junior prior to playing 9 NHL games, the Maple Leafs would free up three additional slots within the 50-SPC limit.

Please Note: PTO’s (Professional Tryout Offer) and Players signed to a American Hockey League contract only, do not count towards the 50 contracts, only  Standard Player Contract (SPC) do.

SPC: This is the what a player signs to lay out the terms of their playing status and salary.

PTO: This is a Professional Try Out and is found only in the AHL. This type of contract is limited to 25 games and a player can only be signed to a PTO twice per season. After the second time, the player is either signed to a Standard Player Contract, is a free agent, or if the player is signed to an ECHL team, he is then returned to that team.

ATO: This is an Amateur Try Out and it is found in the NHL, the AHL, and the ECHL. This type of contract is for players that are leaving college and attempting to turn professional, are done with college, or are graduating from the junior leagues. This is a very common practice near the end of the professional seasons as they go deeper into the year than college or junior schedules
